The European Commission approves allowing the 44 tons to be implemented throughout the European Union

The European Commission has made public its proposal to amend the current European Directive on weights and dimensions of transport vehicles, which approves allowing the introduction of 44 tons in trucks throughout the European Union as well as cross-border traffic of Eurotruck vehicles 25.25 meters.

MADRID. For this reason, as confirmed by the General Director of Land Transport of the European Commission in a letter sent to the President of Fenadismer (National Federation of Transport Associations of Spain), in his capacity also as President of the European association of carriers UETR, the The main objective of this Directive “is to drive the adoption of zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles and promote modal compatibility and cooperation, through strong incentives, including additional payload, for operators to green their fleets or participate in intermodal operations”.

To this end, it proposes, as the most effective measures to achieve these objectives, to automatically authorize the cross-border transport of heavier or longer vehicles between all the neighboring Member States that allow it and to harmonize the maximum weights and dimensions with the most common limits currently allowed, by increasing the maximum weight to 44 tons, as is already allowed in 13 Member States, but promoting zero emission vehicles, as well as allowing cross-border transport of Euromodular vehicles (mega-trucks) of up to 25.25 meters in length and 60 tons .

Although the final processing and approval of the new European Directive will take at least 2 years, it should be remembered that at the national level the Ministry of Transport has been processing a national level regulation project for the modification of the regulation of weights in recent months. and dimensions of the transport vehicles, in coordination with the organizations of the sector, with the objective of introducing the 44 tons in the Spanish transport fleet and the simplification of the requirements for the authorization and circulation of mega-trucks and duotrailers.

However, the electoral advance has prevented its definitive approval, so we will have to wait for the formation of the new Government that comes out of the polls to continue the processing of said norm.

At present, 13 countries of the European Union already allow at the national level 44 tons of cargo in goods transport vehicles, as the Government intended to introduce, although the electoral advance has paralyzed the approval of the new norm.
