Due to the dramatic situation that the Valencian Community has experienced these days due to the strong floods caused by the DANA, the more than 1,200 stevedores of the port of Barcelona have decided to act to help alleviate the effects of this tragedy. In a statement issued by the Port Stevedores Organization of Barcelona (OEPB), they have announced two solidarity actions to contribute to the recovery of the most affected areas.
The first measure consists of the donation of the salaries earned by the workers of the ships diverted from the ports of Valencia and Castellón. These funds will be allocated, in collaboration with the most affected municipalities of the Horta Sud, such as Alaquàs, Albal, Aldaia, Alfafar and others, to help the victims and finance reconstruction tasks in the affected areas.
In addition, the second initiative consists of a collaboration with the association of self-employed transporters SINTRAPORT to enable 11 trucks loaded with resources destined for the cleaning and reconstruction of the devastated areas. OEPB volunteers will travel to the affected towns to directly collaborate in the recovery tasks.
The OEPB has stressed that, “although they are aware that this tragedy could have been avoided, their response is based on the solidarity and commitment of the working class to alleviate the suffering of those affected and contribute to the reconstruction of the Valencian towns. This solidarity action recalls the similar effort made during the pandemic, when the dockers also mobilized their resources in favor of the cause.”
